I recently received an email from the Obama administration stating various programs were in place to assist in re-establishing the lives of persons that have made bad choices, but one question still remains; WHAT ABOUT THE PROGRAMS THAT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST CONVICTED FELONS AND REFUSE TO GIVE THE SECOND CHANCE? The email states: President Obama has worked to reduce recidivism and improve strategies that allow formerly incarcerated individuals to rejoin society successfully. The Administration convened a Cabinet-level Federal Inter agency Reentry Council that brought together twenty federal agencies with the goal of removing barriers to successful reentry. The Council’s ongoing work has already resulted in improvements in employment and job retention strategies, substance abuse treatment, housing stability, and mental health counseling for those returning from prison or jail. I have contacted various programs within the state of Colorado; many of these programs DO NOT employ, support, or tolerate any type of convicted felon affiliation within their facility. Next question, who are these programs actually for? As an educated felon, I find less opportunity than before I was convicted (unusual conviction, causes difficulty in finding employment). Unemployed, over the age of 40 and living with my parents. I'm over qualified for McDonald’s and unable to work as a counselor because ALL of my FA was given to a school whom discriminated against those being different and wanting to help others, held my degree. This is a serious issue that should not be ignored, I’m frustrated, people are not being taken seriously! Why is this country REACTIVE instead of PROACTIVE? Could we have saved the lives at Century 16, did James Holmes tell someone something was going on? Did Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold report bullying to authorities? I reported bullying with my niece and no one knew what the “Safe Schools Act” consisted of in Aurora Public Schools, REACTIVE or PROACTIVE? My point is, I wanted to bring this issue to the attention of many, to expose schools like Argosy University and to accept me as well as others for their imperfections. Their actions and words hurt, and I hate to think of someone having to go through a similar situation because of an un-expectant injury or disability. Titles are un-expectant, convicted felon nor epileptic was planned, but they exist, and for a University to place limitations regardless of disabilities is disheartening, especially for people who have hopes and dreams of someday expanding on their knowledge to help others. The theorists Lazarus explained that everyone was and is different in how we learn differently as individuals. That same theorists said human behavior is not good or evil, it is shaped by the environment, Argosy University left me with some malevolent feelings, and I was not shaped by such an evil environment.
